Public music is debauched by the interpersonal transactions levied against it in the open market. Private music endures no such indignity; it is not — cannot be — denominated. Private music does not belong to the street; it belongs to the patron. The perfect artist is a servant, whereas the producer of public music, who would profit, is a mere performer.
